Scripture: Massacre of the Innocents - after Jesus had been born ...

King Herod assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people, and inquired of them where the Christ should be born. And they said to him: In Bethlehem of Judea; for thus it is written by the prophet:

Then Herod having secretly called the Magi, inquired of them strictly the time at which the star appeared; and sending them to Bethlehem, said: Go, make strict inquiry for the young child: and when you have found him, bring me word, that I also may go and worship him.

And after hearing the king, they departed; and lo, the star which they had seen at its rising, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with very great joy.

Herod, seeing that he had been deceived by the Magi, was greatly enraged; and, having sent out, he slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from the age of two years and under, according to the time which he had strictly inquired of the Magi. ...

(Matt 2:4-17)

Note: King Herod orders the execution of all male children two years old and under in the vicinity of Betlehem and the Catholic Church regards them as the first Christian martyrs.

Let us pray:

Almighty and everlasting God, Lord of Heaven and earth, Who dost reveal Thyself to little ones; grant, we beseech Thee, to honor meetly the holy mysteries of Thy Son, the Child Jesus,

and follow him humbly in our lives,

so that we may come to the eternal kingdom promised by Thee to little ones.

Through the same Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Scripture: Three Magi from the East

But after Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem, saying:

Where is he that has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star at its rising, and have come to worship him. And hearing it, king Herod was alarmed, and all Jerusalem with him.

He assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people, and inquired of them where the Christ should be born. They said to him:

Scripture: Three Magi from the East

And they said to him: In Bethlehem of Judea; for thus it is written by the prophet:

And thou, Bethlehem, land of Judah,

art by no means the least among the princes of Judah;

for out of thee shall come a Governor, who shall rule my people Israel.

Then Herod having secretly called the Magi, inquired of them strictly the time at which the star appeared; and sending them to Bethlehem, said:

Go, make strict inquiry for the young child: and when you have found him, bring me word, that I also may go and worship him.

And after hearing the king, they departed; and lo, the star which they had seen at its rising, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with very great joy.

(Matt 2:6-10)

Note: We do not know when the Magi suddenly became the "wise men" and we do not know why it was changed. There is a clear difference between wise men and the Magi (Magus in plural) was a member of a hereditary priestly class among the ancient Medes and Persians.

Scripture:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God.

All things came into being through him, and without him came into being not one thing that is in being. In him is life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.

There came a man, sent from God; his name was John: this man came for a testimony, that he might testify of the light, that all through him might believe. He was not the light, but came that he might testify of the light. That was the true light, which, coming into the world, gives light to every man. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, and the world knew him not.

He came to his own country, and his own people received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, to those that believe on his name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God. And the Word became flesh, and tabernacled among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John testified of him and cried, saying: This was he of whom I said: He that comes after me has been advanced before me, because he was before me.

Scripture:

And there were in the same country shepherds living in the fields, and keeping guard over their flock during the watches of the night. And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were afraid with great fear.

And the angel said to them:

Fear not; for behold, I bring you glad tidings of great joy, which shall be for all the people; for there is born to you this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign to you: you shall find a babe swathed in a stall.

Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of his good pleasure.

And it came to pass when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another: Let us go now to Bethlehem, and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.

Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come,
the glory of the Lord shines upon you.
See, darkness covers the earth,
and thick clouds cover the peoples;
but upon you the LORD shines,

Nations shall walk by your light,

Raise your eyes and look about;
they all gather and come to you:

Scripture:

Beloved:
We receive from him whatever we ask,
because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.
And his commandment is this:
we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ,
and love one another just as he commanded us.
Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them,
and the way we know that he remains in us
is from the Spirit whom he gave us.

Beloved, do not trust every spirit
but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God,
because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
This is how you can know the Spirit of God:
every spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh belongs to God,
and every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus
does not belong to God.
This is the spirit of the antichrist
who, as you heard, is to come,
but in fact is already in the world.

After Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem, saying:

Where is he that has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star at its rising, and have come to worship him.

Herod having secretly called the Magi, inquired of them strictly the time at which the star appeared; and sending them to Bethlehem, said: Go, make strict inquiry for the young child: and when you have found him, bring me word, that I also may go and worship him.

After hearing the king, they departed; and lo, the star which they had seen at its rising, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with very great joy.

Scripture:

Coming into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother; and falling down they worshipped him; and having opened their treasures they offered to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew into their own country by another way. But after they had withdrawn, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying: Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there till I bring thee word; for Herod is about to seek for the young child, to destroy him.

(Matt 2:1-13)

Let us pray:

Almighty and everlasting God, Lord of Heaven and earth, Who dost reveal Thyself to little ones; grant, we beseech Thee, to honor meetly the holy mysteries of Thy Son, the Child Jesus,

and follow him humbly in our lives,

so that we may come to the eternal kingdom promised by Thee to little ones.

Through the same Christ our Lord.

Amen.

(For the Epiphany and its octave.

From The Raccolta 1878, Pope Pius IX.

Guardian of virgins and father, holy Joseph,

to whose faithful care Christ Jesus, very Innoncence,

and Mary, Virgin of virgins, were committed:

I pray and beg of thee, by these dear pledges;

Jesus and Mary, free me from uncleanness,

and make me with spotless mind, pure heart and chaste body,

ever most chastely to serve Jesus and Mary all the days of my life.

R. Amen.

Please Note: We have tried to find a proper Novena to Honor Our Lord's Epiphany and like always there are many versions but we have not really found an official one.

We have updated our first try, and this version is actually very nice. Instead of an own-created story, we added the scriptures about the Magi, including the annunciation to the shephards. We also used the daily readings under the section Scripture.

  • We commence with the angelic trisagion by Pope Clement XIV dated 1769. This is for the trinity as it is just a few days since the birth of Our Lord. The three Kings are on their way, first visiting King Herodes.
  • The second part is the Scripture - instead of a created story we tell the Truth. We have also added artwork to enhance the novena.
  • The next step is the "Epiphany and its octave" by Pope Pius IX.
  • Then the prayer to St Joseph as he is the Patron of the current Jubilee Year and Terror of Demons.
  • Ending the novena with one Our father, Hail Mary and Glory be.
  • As an add on, the novena ends with the Loreto litany because Our Lady of Loreto is the extended jubilee year due to the virus.

So, we have both Our Lady and Holy Joseph protecting us this year and it surely must mean something...
